Recklessly Loving

I mean this literally and figuratively.  Let me explain…

This week, once again, has FLOWN by.  I have loved every moment of it.  Last Sunday after church, I was looking for Joshua (my new 3 year old pile of love) to find him crying on a couch with a fever that made me sweat just touching him.  The poor little guy had a RAGING infection in his foot and I held him while he screamed at the nurse in a language that no one understood.  He cried and wailed at the top of his lungs which caused me to well up with tears.  We were quite the emotional pair by the end of the event.  Knowing that the little dude doesn’t have a mom to run to when he clearly is in a ton of pain killed me.  This is his reality from now on and I honestly don’t think it’s fair.

After being drained by this I had some kids, once again, nap on my lap and ride on my shoulders and then I proceeded to play volleyball.  Most of you know, I’m a dancer.  NOT a volleyball player.  I was playing with Suzan and laughing when OUT OF NOWHERE a rock came up out of the ground and I fell. Flat on my face.  It was awesome.

I had a dance party on Monday.  Let me rephrase that… I had a dance BRAWL against a 6 year old named Reagan in the pavilion and lost, even after I whipped out my moon walk and my body worm.  DANG IT. THIS DOESN’T HAPPEN IN AMERICA.

I’m not sure I have mentioned a little girl named Abote yet.  She’s 3. A really tiny 3 year old that only comes to me when I sing.  Well. She peed on the floor of the office on Tuesday.  I love her and she takes great pictures.

Tuesday I cleaned up our frat house after sadly saying goodbye to a group from Texas.  They were such an amazing, dynamic group of people.  “Recklessly” on this day can be exemplified by the dodging of spiders and the dirt under our mat that almost sucked me under in a midst of dead fly wings and cockroaches.

Wednesday was an EARLY day!  I was up at 3:45 to pick up Brenda from the airport!  I’m so excited she’s here and the kids are so happy they get to meet my friend finally.  I showed her around town and played capture the flag in some mud and then a game of football.

Thursday, Bisha (one of the littler girls), had a loose tooth.  Obviously this was intriguing to me so I went on a hunt to find something that resembled dental floss and a door.  This didn’t work.  SO I reached in and pulled.  To my surprise Bisha’s tooth popped out.  An even bigger surprise was that Bisha didn’t cry! WOO

Friday I taught Leah’s class for her while she was in Kampala.  I took the role of the cool aunt and played Uno and made bracelets.  The kids loved it.  I danced and sang for a while with the littler girls that afternoon.  After dinner I was taking my weekly shower (just kidding) when the power went out.  This is always an adventure but let me explain how this day in particular prompted my blog title.  When the power went out my eyes were closed.  I heard everyone in the living room squeal so I opened my eyes.  While doing this I slipped and fell.  Simultaneously pulling on my towel.  It fell into the toilet.  I walked out of the shower laughing and continued to play Uno with the group.  I got up to walk into the kitchen and was wearing my headlamp when I ran into the door.  The door that I didn’t even know existed because its never closed. HILARIOUS.

Why am I sharing this?  It could be because I want to entertain my blog readers. Or it could be that I feel like I’m running face first into a door sometimes.  I’m recklessly loving here physically by being silly and disliking power outages.  However, I’m recklessly loving these Musana kids.   These kids overwhelm me with love every day, I feel like I don’t deserve any of it.  The joy and happiness that exudes from them is exploding out of them all the time.  Whenever I get hung up on something personal or feel like I’m in the least bit of a bad mood they light up my dark path.

Reckless moment of Saturday witnessed by a hilarious volunteer named Jill:  Rebecca (a 5 year old new to Musana) had a wet finger with a dead fly on it.  With some questioning Jill revealed that the fly came from the abyss of boogers in her nose.  Cool.  I was also peed on and had my ponytail chewed on by Abote while we were singing.  Also cool.

Sunday was church again and some more hang out time with the kids.  There were some pretty epic rainstorms this weekend that are impressive for my Colorado state of mind.

Today I pulled weeds. And laughed. I went to the farm with Jill, Maura and Brenda.  We put our feet in muddy boots and walked to the pineapple plants to pull the weeds that had quite an impressive poison caterpillar and spider collection living on them.  We then made our ways to the mango trees and threw sticks at what’s left of mango season.  My low for the week? Mango season is almost over.  After the farm we headed to Musana to eat RICE for lunch, not the usual posho.  Then the girls and I headed to Bwongo, the village the craft project is in to get enchanted by 200 singing children while we were the visitors.  It was kind of surreal to be back.  The village was an amazing part of my summer last year and not much has changed.  We ran out of gas on the road back to the village and instead of stressing we laughed.  Jill giggled so much we got our boda driver to pee his pants.  Kidding.

The agenda for this week hopefully includes loving recklessly some more and maybe a trip to the mountains for Sipi falls!
